Prerequisites

Having access to the rear of the machine is recommended for this installation.

Parts Required

  • Raspberry Pi Compute Module CM4

  • Four M2.5x5mm socket head screws

  • Antenna

Tools Required

  • 2.5mm hex bit or key

  • 2mm hex bit or key

  •  

Procedure

  • Turn off the machine.

  • Unplug the power cable.

  • Remove the Wi-Fi antenna on the back of the machine by unthreading it.

 

  • Remove the back-panel leading to the electronics by removing the six M4x16mm button head screws.

 

  • Carefully unplug the antenna wire from the old compute module. Do not pull with antenna wire to disconnect it, but apply a prying force directly to the metal portion of the connector.

  • Remove the four M2.5x5mm screws securing the old compute module to the main control board.

  • Remove the old compute module.

  • Install the new compute module by carefully lining up the high-density connectors and applying force directly over them to mate the connectors. Be sure the connectors are lined up well before attempting to mate them.

  • Plug in the antenna connector. This is done in a similar fashion as the compute module, make sure the connector lines up well and then apply force on the connector to mate it.

  • Install the four M2.5x5mm socket head screws to secure the compute module.

  • Reinstall the back panel.

  • Install the new antenna, threading it onto the SMA connector.

Considerations

Be very careful with the high density connectors of the compute module and the fragile connector of the antenna wire. Both of these are prone to damage if handled without consideration.

 

Troubleshooting

MCU Unable to Connect

  • After powering up, the control software may need to be configured to match the machine’s physical hardware. If you get a connection error such as the following, you will need to edit a configuration file:

  • First, log into the machine web interface, then open under the ‘machine’ tab open features.ymlfor editing:

  • Replace the line mainboard: manta-m8p-v2-0 with mainboard: manta-m8p-v1-1, then click “Save and restart” in the top right corner:

  • You will be asked if you want to regenerate the printer configuration. Click “Save and generate”:

  • The printer will restart and be ready to use after a few moments.

Move out of Range Leading to “Cancelled” Print

  • The default axis limits in the features.yml file are X300 Y307.5 Z300. This leads to “cancelled” prints where the end g-code in the slicer asks for a Z position larger than 300 which throws the error “Move out of range.”

  • To resolve this issue, set the axis limit for Z to 310 as below:

  • You will be asked if you want to regenerate the printer configuration. Click “Save and generate”:

  • The printer will restart and be ready to use after a few moments.
