There will be times when an update is available or that some applications have been modified or are invalid or corrupt. Clicking the refresh button will check the status of each application. There is also a master upgrade button at the bottom UPGRADE ALL COMPONENTS that will go through the updates for each application.
The UPGRADE ALL COMPONENTS button is what Pantheon recommends when updating. This ensures all applications are at versions that are fully compatible with each other. Updating one application to the newest version may lead to situations where it is at a version that is slightly incompatible with other applications that are currently at older version. Update all when updating.
When all applications have a green box with a checkmark, your applications are at the latest released version. You can update applications individually with the blue “UPDATE” button

If one of the applications is “DIRTY” then it is likely that a file needed for that application has been modified. If you have modified that file for your machine, then it is safe to ignore the warning unless your system is not behaving properly. When an application is marked “DIRTY” then you can click on the drop down of the “DIRTY” warning, a “Soft Recovery” and a “Hard Recovery” option will available. Click the “Soft Recovery” option first. If that does not resolve the problem, then try the “Hard Recovery” option. This will revert it back to a stable release.
